How often does a saltwater pool need service?

Weekly visits work best for most Weatherford saltwater pools. We check salt levels, clean the skimmer and pump baskets, test all your chemistry, and inspect the salt cell for calcium buildup. During summer when your pool gets heavy use, we sometimes recommend twice-weekly visits. Winter pools running at lower temperatures can sometimes stretch to every other week, but we still test chemistry weekly because balanced water prevents expensive repairs.

Do saltwater pools really not use chlorine?

Your saltwater pool makes its own chlorine from salt. The salt cell uses electrolysis to convert dissolved salt into chlorine gas that sanitizes your water. You're not adding liquid or tablet chlorine, but chlorine is definitely in your pool—your system just produces it automatically. When people say saltwater pools don't use chlorine, what they mean is you don't have to buy and handle harsh chlorine chemicals. But the water still contains chlorine that kills bacteria and algae.

Why does my salt cell keep getting white buildup on it?

That white crust is calcium scaling from Weatherford's hard water. Parker County water has high calcium levels that stick to the salt cell's metal plates when they're producing chlorine. If your pH runs high (above 7.6), calcium deposits form even faster. We clean cells by removing them and soaking in diluted acid to dissolve the calcium. Most cells need cleaning every three to four months here. Pools with consistently high pH or calcium hardness above 400 ppm need cleaning more often.

How long should a salt cell last before I need to replace it?

A properly maintained salt cell lasts four to seven years in Weatherford. Cells wear out faster when they're constantly running at maximum output, never get cleaned of calcium deposits, or operate in water with unbalanced chemistry. We've seen cells fail in two years from neglect and others run strong for eight years with regular cleaning and balanced water. The key is keeping your pH between 7.2 and 7.6, cleaning calcium off the plates regularly, and not overworking the cell by running it at 100% output all season.

What happens if my salt level gets too low?

Your salt cell can't make enough chlorine when salt drops below the minimum level (usually around 2,700 ppm). The system might show an error code or just produce weak chlorine that doesn't keep your water clean. You'll notice cloudy water or algae starting to grow. We test salt levels with digital meters and add pool-grade salt when needed. It takes about 24 hours for new salt to dissolve and distribute evenly, so we plan ahead rather than waiting until your system stops working.

Can you convert my regular chlorine pool to saltwater?

Yes, but it's not just dumping salt in your pool. We need to install a salt chlorine generator (the control box and cell), check that your existing equipment can handle saltwater, and sometimes upgrade certain metal parts that corrode in salt. Some pool surfaces and older heaters don't work well with salt systems. We inspect everything first, give you an honest answer about whether conversion makes sense for your specific pool, and handle the full installation if you decide to switch. The process takes about half a day for most Weatherford pools.
