One shock treatment doesn’t kill all the algae in a green pool. Algae forms protective layers and hides in corners, behind ladders, and in tiny pores in your pool surface. The first shock kills surface algae, but living spores remain deeper in the water and on surfaces. We shock repeatedly over several days, brush thoroughly between treatments, and maintain high chlorine levels to kill everything. If we shocked once and stopped, you’d see the pool start to clear, then turn green again within days as surviving algae regrows. Complete algae death requires sustained high chlorine and multiple treatments.
Chemical treatment costs less than draining for most green pools. Draining requires refilling with thousands of gallons of Weatherford water (which isn’t cheap), rebalancing all new chemistry, and risks damaging your pool surface. Parker County has expansive clay soil that shifts when groundwater levels change. An empty pool can pop out of the ground or crack from soil pressure. We only recommend draining if your pool has been neglected for over a year, has severe staining that won’t come out, or has structural problems that need repair. For regular green pools—even really bad ones—chemical recovery works better and costs less.
No. Cloudy water during green pool cleanup still contains dead algae, high chlorine levels from shocking, and possibly living algae spores we haven’t killed yet. Chlorine levels during treatment run three to five times higher than safe swimming levels—high enough to irritate skin, eyes, and lungs. We test chlorine daily and tell you when it’s safe to swim. That happens after the water clears completely and chlorine drops back to normal levels (one to three ppm). Usually that’s 24 to 48 hours after the pool looks clear. Swimming too early exposes you to chemicals and bacteria that can make you sick.
We vacuum it out to waste, which means sending it straight out of your pool instead of through your filter. Dead algae settled on the bottom looks like green or gray dust coating everything. If we tried to vacuum it through your filter, the filter would clog immediately and stop working. Vacuuming to waste removes the dead matter completely but also removes several thousand gallons of water. We refill your pool while we work and rebalance the chemistry with the fresh water. Your pool loses water during treatment, but that’s necessary to actually remove the problem instead of just circulating it.
Light green pools usually clear in three to five days with aggressive treatment. Dark green or black swamp pools take seven to ten days. The timeline depends on how thick the algae is, whether your filter is working properly, and if we find black algae or mustard algae mixed in with the regular green stuff. We can’t rush the process—dead algae has to be vacuumed out, chlorine levels need to stay high for at least 24 hours after the water clears, and your filter needs time to catch all the fine particles making the water cloudy. Trying to speed things up by cutting treatment short just means your pool turns green again a week later.

A green pool isn’t just ugly—it’s unsafe. You can’t see the bottom, which means you can’t see if someone’s struggling. Algae harbors bacteria that cause ear infections, skin rashes, and worse.
Green pools happen when maintenance stops. Maybe you went on vacation, had health issues, or just got busy and let things slide. Or you bought a house with a neglected pool that’s been sitting untouched for months. Either way, that green swamp in your backyard can become a clean, swimmable pool again.
We’ve recovered hundreds of green pools across Parker County. The process takes time and works in stages, but we get pools back to clear water without draining them (which costs more and can damage your pool surface in Weatherford’s clay soil).
Expert Swamp Pool Recovery
The first thing people ask is “How long until I can swim?” That depends on how bad the algae is. Light green pools usually clear in three to five days. Dark green or black swamp pools can take seven to ten days of aggressive treatment.
We start by removing everything we can see—leaves, branches, dead animals, toys, and any large debris floating or sunk to the bottom. You’d be surprised what we find in neglected pools. This step matters because organic debris feeds algae and makes chemical treatment harder.
Next comes chemistry testing. Your pH is probably sky-high, alkalinity is off, and there’s zero chlorine. We adjust pH first because high pH makes chlorine worthless. Then we shock the pool with massive doses of chlorine—often 10 to 20 pounds for an average-sized pool, compared to the one or two pounds used for routine shocking.
The water turns cloudy within hours as algae dies. This is good. It means the shock is working. We run your filter continuously for the first 48 hours, backwashing or cleaning it multiple times as it catches dead algae. Your filter does more work during green pool cleanup than it does in months of normal operation.

Pool Maintenance
After we restore your green pool, regular maintenance prevents it from happening again. We set up weekly service that includes testing chemistry, adding chemicals, cleaning the filter, and checking equipment. Consistent care is cheaper than repeated green pool cleanups.
Aledo and Brock pools that turn green face the same recovery process Weatherford pools do. The treatment doesn’t change based on location—it changes based on how neglected the pool got and what’s growing in it.
Pool Cleaning Service
Day two or three is when we vacuum. The water is still cloudy but the algae is dead and settled on the bottom. We vacuum to waste, which means sending all that dead algae straight out of your pool instead of through your filter. This step removes thousands of gallons of water, so we refill while we work.
Green pool cleanup uses more chemicals than a year of normal maintenance. We go through multiple buckets of shock, several gallons of muriatic acid to drop pH, algaecide to prevent regrowth, and clarifier to help your filter catch the fine particles that keep water cloudy. The chemical cost is significant, but it’s still cheaper than draining and refilling your pool.
Your filter gets destroyed during green pool cleanup. The cartridge or DE grids get packed with dead algae that never fully washes out. We usually recommend replacing the filter media after cleanup because a clogged filter means your pool won’t stay clear even after we get the water right.
Black or dark green pools sometimes have mustard algae or black algae mixed in with the regular green algae. These types are resistant to normal chlorine levels. We use extra brushing, specialized algaecides, and maintain higher shock levels for longer to make sure everything dies. Missing even a small patch means the whole pool can turn green again in a week.
Weatherford’s hard water makes green pool cleanup harder. High calcium levels cause cloudiness that looks like algae but is actually calcium precipitation from shocking. We use sequestrants to keep calcium dissolved while we treat the algae, then deal with calcium balance after the pool clears.
Equipment often fails on neglected pools. Pumps seize up from sitting idle. Filters crack from freezing during winter. Heaters corrode from unbalanced water. We inspect everything during cleanup and let you know what needs repair or replacement before it causes bigger problems.
Some pools are too far gone for chemical recovery. If your pool has been empty or sitting as a swamp for over a year, the surface might be stained beyond saving, the plumbing might be clogged with debris, or structural issues might need addressing before adding water. We assess the situation honestly and tell you if drain-and-repair makes more sense than chemical cleanup.
The worst green pools we’ve seen had frogs, snakes, and standing water mosquito breeding grounds. Health departments can fine homeowners for neglected pools that become mosquito habitats. We treat these pools carefully, removing wildlife safely and treating the water to kill mosquito larvae before starting algae removal.
Pool parties get planned around our cleanup timeline. We give realistic estimates for when the pool will be swimmable. Rushing the process by cutting treatment short just means the pool turns green again days later. We maintain high chlorine levels for at least 24 hours after the water clears to make sure all algae is dead, not just knocked back.
Prevention after cleanup means fixing what caused the green pool originally. If your pump timer broke and the pool wasn’t circulating, we replace the timer. If you were gone for months, we set up our service plan so it doesn’t happen again. If you couldn’t afford chemicals, we show you the minimum maintenance schedule that prevents total failure without breaking your budget.
We serve Parker County families facing green pools they don’t know how to fix. Whether you’re in Weatherford, Aledo, Brock, or nearby areas, we bring the experience and chemicals to turn your swamp back into a pool your family can use.
